Puzzle genius Scott Kim to speak at 'Iolani School

Scott Kim, known as the M.C. Escher of the alphabet, will speak on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in 'Iolani School's Seto Hall. The lecture/demonstration entitled "Thinking Upside Down" will focus on the intersection of arts, music and math. It is free and open to the public.Kim is the author of "Inversions", a bestseller that describes recasting words into ambigrams or graphical figures that spell out words in another direction or orientation. He also designs visual puzzles and games for the Internet, computer games, magazines and toys. His puzzles are visually stimulating and broadly appealing and he is a regularly featured speaker at the International Game Developers Conference and Casual Games Conference. Kim graduated from Stanford University with a bachelors of arts in music and a PhD in computers and graphic design. His first puzzles appeared in Scientific American in Martin Gardner's "Games" column. Isaac Asimov called Kim "the Escher of the alphabet." Kim is the 2008 'Iolani School Keables Chair, spending a two week teaching residency at the school. Past Keables Chair Holders include Poet Laureate Billy Collins and playwright Lee Cataluna.
