Bishop Museum launches yearlong hula film fest

The Bishop Museum Association Council will present its first yearlong Hula Film Festival, coordinated by Hawaiian historian Nanette Napoleon, part of the Pacific education program. It's sponsored by Kamehameha Schools, Ka'iwakiloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center.

The Traditions of the Pacific: Hula Film Festival will kick off next month with a film-a-month event Tuesday nights at Atherton Halau on the grounds of Bishop Museum; $5 (free for members); 848-4187.

Films include:

  • Feb. 12: "Iolani Luahine: Hawaiian Dancer," with guest speaker DeSoto Brown, and "The Hula of Old Hawaii."

  • March 11: "Through Namaka's Eyes: The Life of Patience Bacon."

  • April 15: "Kumu Hula: Keepers of a Culture."

  • May 13: "Biography Hawaiši: Maiki Aiu Lake," guest speakers Craig Howes and Coline Aiu.

  • June 10: "American Aloha: Hula Beyond Hawaii."

  • July 8: "Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula."

  • Aug. 12: "Holo Mai Pele."

  • Sept. 16: "Keepers of the Flame: The Cultural Legacy of Three Hawaiian Women," guest speakers Eddie and Myrna Kamae.

  • Oct. 14: "Hula Girls."

  • Nov. 18: "Kumu Hula: A Tradition of Teachers" and "Aloha From Paris."
