Golf: Haig, Westwood share Qatar Masters lead

Associated Press

DOHA, Qatar — Anton Haig and Lee Westwood each shot 5-under 67s today to share the lead after the first round of the Qatar Masters.

Haig and Westwood lead a group of seven players by two strokes at the Doha Golf Club — Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia, Paul Broadhurst, Marcel Siem, Johan Edfors, Alexander Noren and Henrik Stenson.

Haig had six birdies, including four on the first nine holes. The South African finished with one bogey.

"It is all about confidence I have right now," the 22-year-old Haig said. "I just started out with a few rhythm drills and then hit the ball pretty decent. I putted really well."

Westwood, who tied for second last week at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, had five birdies in his round.

"I am in much better physical condition now, thanks to my visits to the gym. I feel alive and I am not lethargic at all," the Englishman said. "Last week, I was a bit rusty, but now I feel better."
