Radford's girls basketball team capped off a special "Senior Night" by rallying past Pearl City, 42-27, to clinch its fourth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division championship at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

The Rams improved to 11-0 in the West, with one game remaining at second-place 'Aiea (8-2) on Jan. 31. Pearl City fell to 4-6.

Before the Radford seniors began their varsity careers, Pearl City had been the top team in the West for several years. But the Rams are 44-3 in divisional play the past four seasons, and seniors Marlena Malepeai, Chelsea-Ann Villanueva, Brittini Fuller, Marsheen Dupont and Jasmine Mailo have been a big reason why.

"It feels good, because everybody contributed," said Malepeai, a four-year starter at forward who finished with nine points and eight rebounds last night. "I thank the coaches, because we've had good coaches. And even though we have new players come in, we always stick together."

All five seniors started last night, but quickly found themselves trailing 8-0 midway through the first period.

But 6-foot sophomore center TaNitra Byrd entered the game at about the three-minute mark and Radford proceeded to score the final six points of the quarter to cut it to 8-6 entering the second.

With Byrd again on the bench, the Chargers maintained their lead and pushed it to 13-8, until a layup by Bui Baravilala started the Rams on a 10-3 run that put them up 18-16 at halftime.

After Markeshia Manning tied it on a putback to open the second half, Baravilala answered with a 10-foot turnaround baseline jumper to give Radford the lead for good at 20-18. Byrd had three points, three rebounds and two blocks in the period to help the Rams take a 27-22 lead heading into the fourth.

"I thought we could stay with them, but TaNitra is a big body and we couldn't stop her," Pearl City coach Mike Morton said. "We started four sophomores and one senior, so this is a time for us to get experience."

The Chargers could not close the gap in the final quarter, and Radford finished the game with a 12-2 run in the last 4:39.

"Pearl City was ready, and I told our girls that everybody will be gunning for us," said Rams first-year coach Tani Dutro. "But definitely, the senior leadership we've had has been a huge influence on the whole team, especially with a new coach. You can't create that kind of leadership; it's hard to come by."
