Wagner's 1st 'Ring' slated for HOT's 50th anniversary

The Hawaii Opera Theatre's artistic director, Henry Akina, reports that the company's 50th anniversary gala year, 2010, will kick off with the first opera in Richard Wagner's "Ring" cycle.

There are four operas in the "Ring" cycle, which were written over the course of 26 years, and can draw Wagner fans from all over the world when they are performed.

Other' operas planned for the gala year: Verdi's "A Masked Ball" and Puccini's "La Boheme."

On the agenda for next year, 2009, is "Manon Lescaut" by Puccini, "Abduction from the Seraglio" by Mozart and "Carmen" by Bizet.
