UH softball ranked No. 15 in poll

The University of Hawai'i softball team will open its season ranked No. 15 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Top 25 Preseason poll, it was announced yesterday.

It is the second-highest preseason ranking in school history. UH was No. 9 in 1995.

UH plays Chaminade Feb. 8 and 9 in split-squad scrimmages. Its regular-season opener is Feb. 14 against Kentucky.


GYMNASTICS

MEET SET FOR 'AIEA

More than 200 female athletes are expected to compete in the "Gymnastics in Paradise" international meet today to Sunday at 'Aiea District Park Gym.

The most advanced level gymnasts (Levels 9-10) will compete from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Intermediate gymnasts will compete from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow (Level 8) and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today (Level 7). Levels 4 and 5 (beginning skill levels) will compete 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The meet includes 20 teams from Japan, Canada, Alaska, California, Hawai'i, Texas and Washington.

Admission per session is $5 for children (5 to 18; under-5 free) and $10 for adults. An all-day pass to tomorrow's sessions is $15.

The meet is sponsored by the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics Club (839-4944).

'Aiea District Park Gym is at 99-350 'Aiea Heights Drive in 'Aiea.


WRESTLING

LEE WINS IN CHINA

Moanalua High School graduate Stephany Lee won her match, but the U.S. team came up just short in the World Cup championship Sunday in Taiyuan, China. The Americans upset Japan to get to the final, but fell to China, 4-3.

The United States got wins from Lee (158.5 pounds), Stephanie Murata (105.5) and Marcie Van Dusen (122).


FOOTBALL

COACHING CLINIC SET

USA Football's Honolulu Coaching School, a day-long clinic for youth coaches, is scheduled for Feb. 9 at McKinley High School.

The clinic, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will cover scheme and motivation techniques and teaching fundamentals and drills.

Cost for the clinic, co-sponsored by the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association and USA Football, is $35. Registration is available at www.usafootball.com or by calling 877-5-FOOTBALL.
