Roosevelt's win gives Kalani Red East title

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Roosevelt girls basketball team weaved its way past Farrington last night.

Mikela Thoemmes scored 14 points, and Tiana Sugui and Tiyana Nakasone added 11 apiece as Roosevelt beat Farrington, 49-42, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Girls Red Conference game at McKinley.

Farrington, which trailed 31-24 entering the fourth period, tied it at 33-all with 6:35 left.

Roosevelt then switched to a weave on offensive, which led to an 8-0 run.

Sugui started the spurt by driving in from the left side and hitting an open 12-footer and Keely Bitanga penetrated to the center of the key and hit Thoemmes for a lay-in. Thoemmes, a 5-foot-9 sophomore, also had a putback and nailed two free throws to make it 41-33 with 3:41 remaining.

"The weave, we're going for uncontested layups, looking for something to take possession a little bit," said Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini. "Farrington makes a run at us so we wanted to take possession, run a little bit of clock. We wanted to get the baseline forward (Thoemmes) moving to get her the ball."

Farrington couldn't get closer than five the rest of the way as the Rough Riders hit 8 of 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth.

"We had told our girls if they're going to run a weave and try to get open up the middle, we wanted them to switch off on their man," said Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu-Leopoldo. "Unfortunately they didn't."

Kalani (10-1) wrapped up the conference title with Roosevelt's victory. The Rough Riders and Governors are 8-3. Each team plays 12 games.

Thoemmes, who also was solid on the boards, scored eight of her team's 18 points in the final period.

"I love my guards," she said. "They give me good passes. Sometimes I don't finish them, but I tell them good pass anyway."

Nakasone hit a 3-pointer in each of the first three periods.

"When we can get her the ball in a good position, she squares up, she's pretty good," Keanini said.

Dianna Zane had consecutive assists to Thoemmes and Sugui as Roosevelt took a 19-11 lead with 5:10 left in the second period. The Rough Riders took a 21-15 lead at halftime.

Zane, a 5-4 senior guard, also played in the post for Roosevelt, which was 18 of 45 from the field and committed 13 turnovers.

"She does all the little things," Keanini said. "She was rebounding and played 4 (power forward) tonight. She was our big person. She might have a mismatch, but she's still physical enough to handle that."

Lucina Otineru scored nine of her 11 points in the second half and Honour Stone added 10 for Farrington, which was 17 of 50 from the field and committed 18 turnovers.

Otineru and Sofia Folaunahina each completed three-point plays and Valerie Lesu hit a 3-pointer during Farrington's 9-2 run, which tied it at 33-all.

"She turned it up in the second half," Tatupu-Leopoldo said of Otineru. "She got some key rebounds for us, made some key baskets."
