Horse racing: Donato Hanover wins harness top honor

Associated Press

DOVER, Del. — Donato Hanover beat Deweycheatumnhowe fair and square and easily won harness racing's 2007 Horse of the Year honors.

Winner of his first 11 races this year before a loss in the season-ending Breeders Crown, Donato Hanover received 157 of the 191 votes by the U.S. Harness Writers Association.

Deweycheatumnhowe, who earned Trotter of the Year for a 10-for-10 2-year-old campaign, was second with 13 votes. Snow White, the 2-year-old filly trotter of the year, was third with 11 votes.

Tell All, winner of the Little Brown Jug, was voted Pacer of the Year at Sunday night's awards dinner.

Donato Hanover, chosen last month as trotting's 3-year-old colt champion, won the Hambletonian, World Trotting Derby and Canadian Trotting Classic and finished the year with 11 wins in 13 starts. The colt set a single-season record for trotters with $2.3 million in purses and equaled the fastest trotting mile in history by winning the Kentucky Futurity in 1:50.1.

Steve Elliott, who trained Donato Hanover and Southwind Tempo, was trainer of the year for the second time. He also won in 1988.

Tim Tetrick, who set records with 1,188 wins and $18.3 million in earnings in 2007, was selected driver of the year.
