High wind advisory issued for Kohala, South Point, Kau

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service today issued a high-wind advisory for the Big Island and high-surf advisory for east-facing shores of all islands except Hawai'i.

NWS lead forecaster Derek Wroe said gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected tonight in Kohala, South Point and Ka'u.

The rest of the state can expect breezy conditions with 15-25 mph winds and occasional gusts up to 35 mph through Friday, Wroe said.

Surf 8 to 10 feet on east-facing shores from a storm front in central California that has now moved inland will continue over the next several days due to locally windy conditions, Wroe said.

However, a northwest swell is expected to bring surf up to 15 feet tonight to north-facing shores. The surf is expected to peak early tomorrow, according to Wroe.
