Baby penguin at Hyatt Maui ready for his close-up

Advertiser Staff

A baby African black-footed penguin born Oct. 20 in the wildlife display at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Ka'anapali, Maui, has emerged from his parents' care and can be viewed by guests.

Baby "Buddha," whose parents are George and Waddles, was born covered with downy feathers but now has gained a new dark blue coat and will eventually acquire a black-and-white "suit." He is among more than 40 exotic birds and hundreds of fish that live on the property. Free tours are given at 10 a.m. each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Recent films on penguins — including "March of the Penguins," and "Surf's Up!" — have raised interest in the animals. Christina Sagadraca, head of the hotel's wildlife department, said many guests are surprised to learn that only two of the 17 species of penguins actually live in the Antarctic region.
