Hannemann issues statement following Hinckley death

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann issued the following statement following the death of Gordon B. Hinckley:

"Gordon B. Hinckley, president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a friend of the people of Hawai'i and the Pacific. I join the 49,000 Mormons throughout the state, and those across the globe, who will miss his leadership.

"All the heartfelt accolades and tributes we are hearing ring true. Having had the privilege of meeting him and enjoying his work, I know he brought humility, integrity, and strength to his enormous responsibilities. He was a strong supporter of the church's work in Hawai'i, particularly in the La'ie community, where I know his spiritual legacy will continue to live and benefit the members.

"President Hinckley was an open and sincere man who was the ideal choice to lead his church into the 21st Century. His grace and style were perfectly suited to our contemporary times and needs, and we will all miss him very deeply."
