Moiliili man convicted of online sex crime

Advertiser Staff

A 23-year-old Mo'ili'ili man convicted today for using the Internet to set up a sexual encounter will be sentenced under stiffer guidelines passed in July 2006.

Ivan Yuichi Sakata, who must register as a sex offender, was found guilty of first-degree electronic enticement of a child and will be sentenced April 14 by Circuit Judge Steven S. Alm

The 2006 law sets the maximum sentence at 10 years in prison and the minimum at five years probation with a one-year prison term as a condition of probation.

Sakata used the Internet to solicit a Hawai'i Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force agent whom he believed to be a 13-year-old girl. During an online chat, Sakata indicated he wanted to engage in sexual conduct at his apartment and arranged to meet the girl at the Kahala Mall Starbucks on May 15, 2007.

Sakata was arrested at 10 a.m. when he showed up for the meeting.
