Soccer: Beckham declares himself fit for England team

Associated Press

LONDON — David Beckham assured England coach Fabio Capello he's fit, hoping to be selected to the national team for his 100th game.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder has been training with Arsenal to get in shape for the Feb. 6 match against Switzerland at Wembley.

"I'm as fit as I can be. I'm fit and sharp and I'm ready to be selected," Beckham told BBC World today. "Hopefully I've worked hard enough this month to get myself picked in the squad."

There is speculation Capello won't select someone who is not currently playing competitive soccer and may instead go for Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips or Tottenham's Aaron Lennon on the right side of midfield.

"I have been training with one of the fittest teams in Europe, I've done everything possible to be fit," Beckham said, "and I am without doubt ready for it, but it's out of my hands now."

On Tuesday, Beckham was in Brazil to announce plans to open a soccer academy and professional sports complex. The MLS season starts in March.
