Hawaii foreclosures rise, but rank low nationally

Advertiser Staff

The number of foreclosure filings in Hawai'i tripled in December compared to a year earlier, though the foreclosure rate for the entire year remained one of the lowest nationwide.

There were 130 foreclosure filings last month in the state, a 202 percent increase compared to December 2006, according Realty Trac, a California-based real estate research firm.

The firm also released national figures showing more than 1 percent of all U.S. households were in some stage of foreclosure during the year.

In Hawai'i, only about 0.2 percent of households were in some stage of foreclosure last year. That ranked the state as having the seventh lowest foreclosure rate nationally.
