City releases bids for mass transit vehicle

Advertiser Staff

The city has received a dozen submissions from suppliers hoping to provide the vehicles for the city's proposed fixed guideway transit system.

Twelve bids have been received in response to the city's Request for Information, according to a news release.

The bids include all four technology options previously discussed by the city council.

The options are "steel wheel on steel rail," "rubber tire on concrete," "monorail," and "magnetic levitation."

Information received will be reviewed and evaluated by a five member independent panel that will recommend the fixed guideway vehicle technology. The panel was approved by the city council last week.

Photos of some of the vehicles are available at the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project Web site at www.honolulutransit.org.
