Hawai'i's three highest peaks are blanketed in snow today, with more snowstorms expected this afternoon.

While it is common to see white caps atop 13,677-foot-high Mauna Loa and 13,796-foot-high Mauna Kea on the Big Island during the winter, snow is less frequent on Maui's Haleakala, which has an elevation of 10,023 feet.

Icy roads and low visibility forced the National Park Service to close the summit of Haleakala National Park, including the visitor centers and Hosmer Grove campground. Visitors are being turned back at park headquarters at the 7,000-foot level.

The National Weather Service is predicting scattered snow showers and possibly heavy snowfall this afternoon. High temperatures will be near 36 degrees, with winds from the east at around 26 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph.

There is a slight chance of freezing rain and snow showers tonight, the weather service said.

Tomorrow's Haleakala forecast calls for isolated showers, with similar cold temperatures and breezy winds.

Winter weather advisories for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa call for scattered snow showers this afternoon, with the potential for heavy snowfall. The National Weather Service also warns of possible thunder around the two volcanoes.

High temperatures at Mauna Kea will be near 34 degrees, with east winds of 17 mph and gusts up to 22 mph.

At Mauna Loa, highs will be around 31 degrees with winds at 14 mph.

The forecast calls for a slight chance of freezing rain and snow showers at both sites tonight, with lows in the 20s.

Weather forecasters are predicting isolated showers and calmer winds tomorrow.
