'Unstable' Hawaii weather in forecast for next few days

Advertiser Staff

A cold upper low over the state is creating some unstable conditions, including gusty winds and numerous showers.

"Weather will be fairly unstable for a couple of days," said Tom Birchard, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

He said the weather system causing wintery conditions on the summits of Haleakala, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa is expected to move away over the next few days, but the instability could linger through the weekend.

Expect partly sunny skies and breezy weather throughout the day with numerous showers in the afternoon in windward and mauka areas, the weather service said. In leeward areas, expect scattered showers with possible heavy rainfall.

High temperatures will be from 75 to 80 degrees and trade winds from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts to 35 mph.

Tonight, expect more of the same with cloudy and breezy conditions. Windward and mauka areas can expect scattered showers and isolated showers in leeward areas.

Low temperatures will be from 64 to 69 degrees and trade winds 10 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

A surf advisory remains in effect for east-facing shores.
