Firefighters monitoring 5-acre Makakilo brushfire

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department tonight is monitoring a brush fire in Makakilo which isn't posing an immediate threat to homes.

The fire on a hillside across from a gulch on Wainohia Street, started at about 6:30 p.m., according to department spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Due to darkness and terrain, firefighters are unable to reach the fire scene.

Kealoha said at 9:45 p.m. that the fire had burned about five acres.

Residents told firefighters responding to a downed power line complaint they heard an explosion.

Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Darren Pai said there are no reported outages in the area but added a troubleshooter has been unable to confirm if there is a fallen utility pole and/or blown transformer where the fire is burning.

Kealoha said firefighters will assess the situation at sunrise and will likely use the HFD helicopter for water drops.
