Boosted by a redemptive 25-point, 11-rebound performance by senior center Taylor Mounts, 'Iolani held off visiting Kamehameha, 59-45, last night in a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball showdown.

The Raiders, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 8-2 in the ILH, in first place and a half-game ahead of idle Punahou (7-2) with two games remaining. Kamehameha, ranked No. 4, fell to 6-3.

Two weeks ago, Kamehameha had upset then-No. 1 'Iolani, 44-42, a game in which the 6-foot-5 Mounts scored only two points. Last night, Mounts scored eight points in the first period as the Raiders jumped to a 20-8 lead.

"Last time, we played poorly and didn't give enough effort," Mounts said. "Tonight we gave more effort — we were falling on the ground, going after loose balls."

Kamehameha came out strong in the second period and closed to 22-17 after Pi'i Minns' 3-pointer with 3:40 remaining. But 'Iolani answered with a 7-1 run to close the half, capped by Lionel Fujioka's two free throws with 3.9 seconds left to make it 29-18.

The Warriors made two other strong runs at the Raiders in the third quarter, closing to 38-34 on Brandon Dumlao's 28-foot shot at the buzzer.

But Mounts opened the fourth period with five straight points, including a three-point play to give 'Iolani a 43-34 lead with 6:25 remaining.

Kamehameha got as close as 51-45 after Kawika Lyons' 3-pointer with 47 seconds left, but the Raiders sealed the game with eight straight free throws, including six by Mounts. After missing his first free-throw attempt in the first quarter, Mounts made 11 straight in the final period.

"He came to play tonight," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "He made some clutch shots and put the game away with some clutch free throws."

'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said Mounts' turnaround performance "was the difference" between a loss to Kamehameha two weeks ago and the victory last night.

"They're a very physical and athletic team, and they put a lot of pressure on the perimeter," Mugiishi said. "So if you don't have an inside game, it can get really difficult. We told Taylor that he had to produce more, and we told the whole team that we'll need a lot more energy.

"Last time, they got every loose ball. We're not that good a team where we can get away with not playing hard."

After suffering a 70-49 loss at Punahou last week, the Raiders got a lift when the Buffanblu were upset by Mid-Pacific on Saturday, and now 'Iolani suddenly is back atop the ILH standings.

"We were happy, we got a gift," Mounts said of MPI's upset victory. "Now we're back in the race, and hopefully we won't let go."
