HMSA, Filipino Chamber offering 27 scholarships

Twenty-seven scholarships worth $64,000 are available to 2008 Hawai'i high school seniors.

The Hawaii Medical Service Association will be awarding $2,000 scholarships to 21 seniors with the three distinguished recipients getting an additional $1,000. The Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i Foundation will be awarding one $4,000 scholarship and five scholarships of $3,000 each.

Winners of the HMSA scholarships will be selected based on athletic and academic achievements, community involvement, sportsmanship and letters of recommendation.

HMSA applicants must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average in their senior year and must have participated in one of their school's athletic teams in a league-sanctioned sport during the current school year. Student athletes must also submit a short essay on why they believe they deserve a scholarship.

Applications are available at hmsa.com and the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Web site www.sportshigh.com

The HMSA scholship application deadline is Feb. 29.

Applications for the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i Foundation scholarships are available at all high schools statewide. Applications can be downloaded at http://filipinochamber.org/test.asp.

The deadline for receipt of the scholarship application is March 31.

Winners will be selected based on academics (50 percent), college entrance exams (25 percent), a personal statement (15 percent), and activities and honors (10 percent).
