New Mexico State rolls past UH women, 71-53

Senior Irma Kmitiate-Smith came off the bench tonight to score a game-high 17 points as the New Mexico State women's basketball team beat Hawai'i, 71-53, at Las Cruces, N.M.

New Mexico State improved to 5-2 in the Western Athletic Conference and 15-5 overall. UH is 2-5 and 8-12.

Senior Saundra Cariaga led the Rainbow Wahine with 16 points.

UH's Tanya Smith battled foul trouble, picking up her fourth foul with about 11 minutes left in the game. Smith finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Tara Hittle, who also plays for the UH volleyball team, made her third appearance this season, scoring her first career points with a jumper.

UH plays Louisiana Tech at Ruston, La., Saturday.
