Firefighters declare Makakilo brushfire contained

Advertiser Staff

A Makakilo brushfire was declared contained early this evening despite some existing hotspots.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha said companies pulled back water lines and have no immediate plans to return tomorrow. The fire was declared contained at about 2:15 p.m. but companies were called back 90 minutes later because it flared up again.

Kealoha said the flare-up involved logs chopped down earlier which were burning.

The fire scorched an estimated 50 to 75 acres on a hillside across a gulch above 'Elele Street and posed no threat to property.
