An art installation by Los Jaichackers makes its premiere in Hawaii at thirtyninehotel tomorrow, as part of February's First Friday showings and events.
An opening reception is 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 39 Hotel St. An audio-video performance by the duo takes place at 8 p.m.
Los Jaichackers is a collaborative effort between San Francisco-based Julio César Morales and Los Angeles-based Eamon Ore-Giron. Their work integrates performance, video, signage and musical production based on the improvised strategies of DJs, record collectors, street vendors and musicians, and informal economists. Vinyl records with painted surfaces, dissected album covers, collages, vinyl cut-outs, expanses of etched mirror, video projections, and even a live A/V performance on the opening night are part of the exhibition.
Hawaii is a stop on their international museum tour, titled "Phantom Sightings," which includes the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, April 6 through Sept. 1; Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art, Mexico City, October through December 2008; El Museo del Barrio and the Americas Society, New York, March through May 2009; and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, in summer, 2009.
