Flags ordered at half-staff for Leong, Baptiste

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered that state flags be flown at half-staff tomorrow and on Sunday to coincide with memorial services for the late state Rep. Bertha Leong and Kaua'i County Mayor Bryan Baptiste.

Leong, who represented House District 18, passed away on June 16. Memorial services for Baptiste, who passed away on June 22, will be held Sunday at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall. A celebration of his life will follow at the Convention Hall auditorium.

"As a dedicated lawmaker, (Leong) addressed issues in health and business to create a better future for the next generation," said a joint statement by Lingle and Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona. They described her as a "community advocate" who "touched countless lives through her principled leadership, kindness and compassion."

After leaving the House, Leong continued to be involved with issues like a pedestrian bridge for Wailupe Valley Elementary School and flood control along Wailupe Stream, the proclamation states.

Private memorial services for Leong will be held tomorrow.

Baptiste was described by Lingle and Aiona as a "gifted and caring leader devoted to the needs of his island and our state."

They cited his affordable housing projects, his efforts to fight drug abuse and programs to protect public beach access as examples of his "devotion to addressing the real concerns and issues facing residents."

In honor of Leong and Baptiste, Lingle has ordered that flags at all state and county buildings be lowered from sunrise to sunset during the day of their memorial services.
