Volleyball has been good to Shellane Ogoshi. Now, she's hoping to return the favor.

Ogoshi, a 2004 graduate of Roosevelt, completed her collegiate career last fall after leading Hofstra (Long Island, N.Y.) to a 19-12 record and last month was hired by the school as an assistant coach.

"It's exciting that I get to be a part of the Hofstra program for just a little bit longer," Ogoshi said. "My main concern was getting my master's (degree) in finance and I thought the opportunity might come as a grad assistant, not as an assistant coach. I didn't think the opportunity would present itself so quickly."

Ogoshi, a 5-foot-2 setter and libero, appeared in 118 matches in her career, starting all four years and finishing as Hofstra's career leader in assists (4,597) and digs (1,660).

"Shellane is a player every coach wants to have every year," said former Hofstra head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell in a story that appeared in Volleyball Magazine. "She makes everything easier for the team and for the coach. It's like having an extra coach on the floor."

Netherby-Sewell, who resigned in February to take over as head coach at Fresno State, wasn't the only person high on Ogoshi. New Hofstra coach Kristina Hernandez recognized Ogoshi's potential and in May offered the position to her.

"I would say it's going to be a humbling experience. Now the shoe is on the other foot," Ogoshi said. "When you're a player, you have control of the game. Now my job is to provide the tools for the players to use rather than doing it myself."

Last season Ogoshi, a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Setter of the Year, led the Pride with 920 assists and 531 digs. She also had 96 kills, 35 aces and 14 blocks.

In 2004, Ogoshi was named the CAA's Rookie of the Year and in 2005 she was the Player of the Year.

"I've been really lucky here. The people are good, the place is great and I'm involved in a sport that I love," Ogoshi said.

Ogoshi, who was a two-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, earned degrees in international business and finance.
