Man critical after being hit by truck near Haleiwa

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old Wahiawa man was critically injured late Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle on Kamehameha Highway by the Chun's Reef surf spot near Haleiwa on O'ahu's North Shore.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said paramedics were called to the scene about 11:40 p.m.

Police said the man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and was listed in critical condition upon arrival there.

Police vehicular homicide staff members were sent to the area to conduct an investigation.

According to investigators, the man was "playing" in the street when he was hit by a white, 2003 pickup truck that was traveling toward Kahuku.

The driver failed to stop after the truck hit the man but was pulled over by patrol officers about a mile past the area where the pedestrian was hit, investigators said.

The driver, a 27-year-old man from the Haleiwa area, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and failing to render aid, police said.

Investigators said alcohol use — both by the driver and the man who was hit — appears to be a factor in the case.
