Unionized bus drivers to consider contract offer next week

Advertiser Staff

The 1,200 unionized workers at Oahu Transit Services, which operates TheBus, say they will consider a "best and final" contract offer from the company next week.

The offer was presented Tuesday to the Hawaii Teamsters & Allied Workers Union Local 996, which represents bus drivers, mechanics, maintenance workers and clerical staff. The previous five-year contract expired Monday and the employees have been working on a contract extension since then.

Details of the proposed deal were not released. Union officials will explain the contract offer to their membership, which will vote on the deal on Wednesday.

The union has yet to take a strike authorization vote and a work stoppage is not imminent. In August 2003, unionized workers struck OTS for more than a month over wages and benefits.
