Stanley pounds 21 kills as U.S. tops Spain, 3-2

Honolulu's Clay Stanley had a match-high 21 kills to lead the United States men's national team to a 25-23, 25-22, 29-31, 20-25, 18-16 victory yesterday over Spain in World League volleyball in Madrid.

The U.S. men are 6-1 and lead their World League pool. Spain, is 3-4.

Stanley, a Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum, also had two blocks.

The United States and Spain play again tomorrow.

The U.S. women's national team defeated Poland, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-10, to improve to 6-1 in the World Grand Prix pool play at Chinese Taipei. The U.S. plays Turkey today.

UH alum Kim Willoughby had 12 kills and Heather Bown six for the U.S., while Honolulu's Robyn Ah Mow-Santos and Lindsey Berg shared setting duties.

HAWAI'I 12S TRIUMPH

Ka Ulukoa 12 - Mizuno of Honolulu defeated Borinquen Coqui 12-1 of San Juan, Puerto Rico, 25-16, 25-14, in the 12-year-old club division championship match at the USA Junior Olympic Boys' Volleyball Championships in Sandy, Utah.

Ka Ulukoa 12 - Mizuno reached the gold-medal match by defeating Fusion 12 of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, 25-21, 25-11, in the semifinals. The Hawai'i team was 7-0 in the tournament, dropping just one game.

U.S. JUNIORS FALL TO CUBA

Cuba defeated the United States, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, in the semifinals of the NORCECA Continental Men's Junior Championship last night in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Team USA, which has three Hawai'i players on its roster, will play Mexico for the bronze medal today. Cuba faces Canada for the gold medal.

Murphy Troy of St. Louis, Mo., led the U.S. with 14 points on 10 kills, two blocks and two aces. Honolulu's Tri Bourne, an Academy of the Pacific alum, had three points, while Punahou alum Erik Shoji played the entire match at libero. 'Iolani alum Brad Lawson did not see action.

Cuba converted 47 of 71 kill attempts, while the United States converted 28 of 69.

Cuba also had six aces to three for the U.S. Junior Men.
