Over the holiday weekend, more than 60 million barbecues were held. How can you make yours a little greener in the future? Elizabeth Rogers, author of "The Green Book," offers these tips: Buy fresh fruit instead of packaged. Do that for a year and you'll save more than 50 pounds of waste — and about $30. Use washable plates, glasses and silverware, saving up to $100 over the summer. Set up bins, so the cans and paper can be recycled.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Some uses for everyday objects, jewelry edition:

  • Lose the back of your earring? Plug it in a pinch with a slice of a pencil eraser.

  • Like your necklace just a little longer? Extend it with a chain bracelet. If it looks a little off and doesn't match well, the chain can be hidden in the back of your collar.

    FINAL WORD

"When I think about it now, with a name like Woody, I suppose my path was probably established. It was inevitable that I'd be doing something like this. ... Now, it's pretty hip to be green."
