Tennis: Rezai and Wickmayer lose

PALERMO, Sicily — Third-seeded Aravane Rezai and No. 6 Yanina Wickmayer were upset in the first round of the Palermo International today.

Rezai was beaten by Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay 6-4, 6-1 and Wickmayer wasted three match points in the second set before falling to Georgian qualifier Margalita Chaknashvili 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Seventh-seeded Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine also faced a challenge before overcoming Czech opponent Renata Voracova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on the red clay at the Country Time Club.

Also, Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain rallied past Katie O'Brien of Britain 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 and Chinese qualifier Xinyun Han eliminated Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-0.

Corinna Dentoni outlasted fellow Italian Alberta Brianti 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 and Olivia Sanchez of France was leading 7-6 (1), 4-0 when Ekaterina Bychkova of Russia withdrew with a shoulder injury.
