West Oahu wins 16s baseball title

The West O'ahu Rookies defeated Arizona All-Star Baseball Academy, 4-3, to win the under-16 title at the United States Amateur Baseball Federation 4th of July Classic in El Cajon, Calif., Saturday.

D.J. Andrade, who attends Damien, hit a three-run homer in the championship game. The winning pitcher was T.C. Campbell, a Kamehameha student.

West O'ahu advanced to the championship game by beating the San Diego Gamers, 14-13, earlier in the semifinals. Matthew Nishiyama, who plays for Pac-Five, had a walk-off RBI to clinch the win.


JUDO

11 MEDAL AT JR. NATIONALS

Eleven Hawai'i judoka earned medals at the United States Judo Federation Junior National Championships, which was held at the University of Illinois at Chicago last weekend.

Six won gold medals, including Kapolei's Quentin Hovis, who captured the boys' intermediate 1, under 26 kg. (57 pounds) division and teammate Rodman Salangdron Jr., who won the boys' intermediate 1, under 30 kg. (66 pounds) division.


VOLLEYBALL

PILIPA'A ROLLS IN JUNIORS

Pilipa'a Volleyball Club of Hilo defeated Orlando Gold 17 Black (25-23, 25-17) yesterday to remain undefeated at 6-0 after two days of play at the 2008 USA Volleyball Junior Olympics in Sandy, Utah.

Pilipa'a completed the day with a 3-0 match record. The Hilo team won its pool and advanced to the fourth round.


BASEBALL

MILILANI HIRES HIRAYAMA

Former University of Hawai'i infielder Mark Hirayama has been hired as the new baseball coach for Mililani High School, Trojans athletic director Glenn Nitta said yesterday.

Hirayama replaces Dean Sato, who resigned in May after five seasons. Hirayama lives in Mililani and is a former Trojans assistant coach. He played for UH in 1989 and 1990.
