The submarine USS Hawaii made its first sea trial today in the waters off Groton, Conn.

Three of the first four of the new Virginia-class subs — the Hawaii, Texas and North Carolina — are scheduled to be based at Pearl Harbor, according to a news release.

The $2.4-billion Hawaii, 17 feet longer than the Los Angeles-class subs that are based at Pearl Harbor, is expected to arrive there in 2010.
