WAILUA — A 24-year-old Kapa'a area man was pronounced dead last night at Wilcox Hospital following a traffic crash in Wailua Homesteads.

Kaua'i County officials this afternoon identified the man as James Piekos of Wailua Homesteads. There were no passengers in Piekos' vehicle.

According to a report released by the county, Piekos was traveling east on Kuamo'o Road in an El Camino at about 9:19 pm when he overtook a sedan at a blind corner, crossing double solid lines and into the oncoming traffic. He then struck a westbound Ford SUV with six occupants head on.

The Piekos was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Two of the SUV's occupants suffered injuries and were taken to Wilcox for treatment.

Kuamo'o Road was closed for about 3-1/2 hours following the crash.

The accident marks Kaua'i's eighth traffic fatality this year.
