A Schofield Barracks soldier was killed Tuesday in Iraq by a bomb, family members in Kentucky said yesterday.

Spc. William McMillan III, 22, an Army medic, was killed and five other soldiers injured when an improvised explosive device hit their vehicle, said his mother, Marge McMillan of Lexington, Ky.

McMillan was on his first tour of duty in Iraq and had recently received the Bronze Star, his mother said.

He was based at Schofield Barracks and had been in Iraq since December, his mother said. He was scheduled to be home on leave in September.

McMillan had been married for a year and a half. His wife, Elizabeth, is a student at the University of Kentucky. Elizabeth McMillan said she talked with her husband about 12 hours before he was killed.

Marge McMillan said her son was captain of the football, wrestling and lacrosse teams at Hargrove Military Institute in Virginia. He attended Virginia Military Institute for a year, then enlisted in the Army.

Other survivors include his father, William Jr.; a sister, Laura Buchanan; and a brother, Brad.
