The Chicago White Sox placed closer Bobby Jenks on the 15-day disabled list yesterday and purchased right-hander D.J. Carrasco's contract from Triple-A Charlotte.

Jenks has bursitis near his left (non-pitching) shoulder. The move is retroactive to June 30.

The 27-year-old Jenks is 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA for the AL Central leaders and ranks ninth among AL relievers with 18 saves. He last pitched on June 29 and got the save as the White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs.

Carrasco, 31, was 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA, one save and 23 strikeouts in seven games with Charlotte. He appeared in 101 games over three seasons with Kansas City from 2003-05, going 14-15 with a 4.81 ERA.

"He was the last guy to be cut this spring training," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He's going to give me more flexibility. He has experience. He's available to give us two or three innings if we need it."

Guillen has said right-hander Scott Linebrink, who blew a save in Tuesday night's 8-7, 13-inning victory over Kansas City, will continue to close in Jenks' absence.

BLUE JAYS

Toronto right-hander Dustin McGowan has a tear in his rotator cuff and will miss at least four weeks.

McGowan, 6-7 with a 4.37 ERA, was placed on the 15-day disabled list before yesterday's game and right-hander Brian Wolfe was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take his place.

McGowan, 26, left Tuesday's start after just four innings and 66 pitches, saying the pain he had been feeling in his shoulder over the past few outings had become too much to bear. He underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed the tear.

"We'll know more as the inflammation in there calms down," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "We'll know what the process is."

METS

New York placed right-hander Tony Armas Jr. on the 15-day DL yesterday with a strained abdominal muscle.

Armas' last game was Monday at Philadelphia, when he allowed three runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. He is 1-0 with a 7.56 ERA in three games, including one start, with the Mets this season.

New York recalled right-hander Carlos Muniz from Triple-A New Orleans to take Armas' roster spot. Muniz is 0-1 with a 6.17 ERA in nine appearances for the Mets this year.

RANGERS

Texas scratched All-Star designated hitter Milton Bradley from the lineup last night against the Los Angeles Angels because of soreness in his left knee.

Bradley, the AL leader with a .441 on-base percentage, played the previous two games after leaving Sunday's game at Baltimore because of tendinitis. Rangers manager Ron Washington said Bradley was available to pinch-hit, and the problem wasn't considered serious.

Texas also put pitcher Vicente Padilla on the 15-day DL with a stiff neck, retroactive to Saturday, and recalled right-hander Wes Littleton from Triple-A Oklahoma.

ELSEWHERE

Rockies: Colorado outfielder Ryan Spilborghs was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday, one day after straining his left oblique in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Spilborghs was injured running the bases Tuesday night, and returned to Denver yesterday.

Cubs: Chicago made it official yesterday: injured left fielder Alfonso Soriano won't be able to play in the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium next week. Soriano, on the DL since June 12 with a broken left hand, said Tuesday he wouldn't be able to play again until after the All-Star break but would attend the game in New York.
