Golf: Kelly gets spot in British Open

Associated Press

SILVIS, Ill. — Jerry Kelly found out today that he is going to the British Open, ending any dilemma of whether to play in his hometown tournament or golf's oldest championship.

Kelly was the second alternate for the British Open at the start of the week, but was planning not to go because next week is also the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee, a tournament Kelly considers his "fifth major" because he grew up in Wisconsin.

Luke Donald withdrew today because of a wrist injury, and Kelly learned later in the day that David Toms had withdrawn, giving him a spot at Royal Birkdale.

"I'm excited to play," Kelly said. "I was not going to pass up this chance. If I would have been first alternate, I would not have gone over. I was not going to take the chance of missing both tournaments."
