Fewer fireworks blazes on Maui over holiday

Maui Fire Department officials report a big drop in fireworks-related cases over the Fourth of July weekend.

Only five of 85 fires reported over the holiday period were associated with fireworks, said Capt. Val Martin, an assistant fire marshal at the Fire Prevention Bureau.

Last year, fire crews received a total of 95 alarms over the July 4 weekend, 18 in connection with fireworks.

Martin noted that no firecracker permits were sold this year by the fire department. He also said that light winds helped reduce the fire threat.
