Baseball: Astros sign top pick Jason Castro

Associated Press

HOUSTON — The Astros agreed to terms today with first-round draft pick Jason Castro, the catcher who helped Stanford reach the recent College World Series.

The 20-year-old batted .376 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs in 67 games last season. Before his junior season, he played in the Cape Cod Summer League in 2007 and batted .341 with 24 RBIs to earn a spot in the league's All-Star game.

Houston has not selected a catcher this high in the draft since making Robbie Wine the eighth overall pick in 1983. Castro is the eighth catcher selected in the first round in franchise history.
