Low makes pro debut

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Derrick Low got his first taste of NBA Summer League action last night and appeared to make the most of it, scoring two points and dishing out two assists with no turnovers for the Dallas Mavericks in 3 minutes, 22 seconds of action at the end of the Mavs' 86-69 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The game, played at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas' Cox Pavilion, was the Summer League opener for both teams and the first professional game for Low, a 2004 'Iolani School graduate from Honolulu and former standout at Washington State.

"I had fun," said Low, a 6-foot-2 point guard trying to earn an invitation to Dallas' fall camp as an undrafted free agent. "I felt comfortable and confident, and I just waited my turn like always."

Low is one of several point guards competing for an eventual roster spot.

Keith McLeod, a veteran of 200 NBA games including 88 starts, was signed by the Mavericks yesterday and played 23 minutes at point guard last night. He went 0 for 5 from the field and finished with three points, one assist and two turnovers.

Aaron Miles, a second-year point guard from Kansas, played 15 minutes and scored six points with six assists, two rebounds and two turnovers.

McLeod started at point guard and he and Miles shared all the time at that spot until Low came in for Miles with 3:22 remaining and the Clippers leading, 78-63.

"I knew I had two NBA veterans playing in front of me and that they would get to play first," Low said. "I was just saying, 'I hope the fast guys don't get past me because I'm not warmed up.' The game is a lot faster (than college) — they just go up and down — and I had to go in right away and go from really relaxed to super fast."

Low fed fellow rookie guard JaJuan Smith cutting to the basket with 1:43 left, leading to a layup. Low then scored his own layup 33 seconds later after cutting to the lane and catching an entry pass.

With 51 seconds remaining, Low went coast-to-coast and sped down the lane before dumping a nifty pass to Charles Rhodes, who slammed it home from the left side.

Low's desperation shot from about 28 feet just before time expired glanced off the rim.

"The assistant coach who is coaching the Summer League team (Dwayne Casey) said I played really well," Low said. "He said there will be some lineup and rotation changes for the next game."

The Mavericks' next game is at noon tomorrow against the Golden State Warriors. It will be televised live on NBATV, a premium channel (242) on Oceanic digital cable, and also can be viewed via livestream at www.nba.com/summerleague2008.
