Soccer: Florida team tops Aiea at AYAO National Games

Even with a different group of players, it was the same result for an under-16 girls team from Key Largo, Fla.

The Hurricanes defeated 'Aiea, 2-1, today to repeat as champions of the American Youth Soccer Organization's National Games at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

The Hurricanes also won the under-14 championship in 2006, but only seven players remain from that team. Other players on this Hurricanes team were in the under-12 championship game but lost to a team from La'ie in 2006.

"It felt good because we won and people thought we couldn't win and lots of people left because they thought we couldn't do it," said Heather Williams, who scored both goals for Hurricanes.

The National Games wrapped up yesterday with eight champions from four divisions, boys and girls under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 19. The winners are not called national champions because they were selected to play in the tournament by lottery instead of qualifying.

The next tournament will be in 2010 in Florida.
