You like pets, but does your partner?

Does your mate have to like pets, too?

I think most animal lovers would seek out partners who feel the same way about animals as they do. I tested my theory by doing an informal poll among friends at work and in the animal community. The question: Does your mate have to love animals?

Of the 16 people polled, here's what I learned:

  • 69 percent (11 people) said yes, a mate has to love animals.

  • 25 percent (4 people) said it doesn't matter if a mate likes animals.

  • 6 percent (1 person) said not sure or don't know.

A close friend said, "I would definitely need to have that person LOVE animals, just because sometimes we do things for our animals that nonanimal lovers would find ridiculous."

Another pet lover said: "I honestly can say I probably wouldn't trust someone who didn't like animals."

Adding to my list of "I knew it would turn out this way," a male co-worker said: "I'd want to be sure that my kids get to have a dog just like I did when I was a kid. No boy of mine is gonna grow up not knowing what it's like to have a dog!"

On the flip side, a fellow blogger (male) told me, "It shouldn't matter. People can learn to love animals." Now that's sweet! You can convert someone to be an animal lover just by being with you.

So tell me, does your mate have to love animals like you do?
