Lee's gold lifts U.S. in wrestling

Hawai'i's Stephany Lee won a gold medal to help the United States capture the women's freestyle team title Friday at the World University Wrestling Championships in Thessoloniki, Greece.

Lee, a Moanalua High School alum and three-time state prep champion, defeated Russia's Ekaterina Bukina, 9-7, in the final at 72 kilograms (158.5 pounds). She also won at this event in 2004.

Lee, 23, is a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.


SWIMMING

CHOI FASTEST AGAIN

Shanelle Choi made it 2 for 2 in the 2008 Surf n Sea North Shore Swim Series.

Choi won the open female division of the Cholo's Waimea Bay Swim yesterday, completing the 1.2-mile race in 31 minutes, 33.3 seconds. Nicole Hagi (31:48.3) was second and Kathryn Taylor (32:15.9) third.

Choi also won the first race of the series — the Raging Isle Sprint on June 28.

Dustin Fukuda was the fastest male yesterday, finishing in 29:21.0. He was followed by Kevin Moy (29:37.3) and Daren Choi (29:49.5).

The next race — the Chuns to Waimea — will be July 26.


VOLLEYBALL

MCKIBBIN ON U.S. TEAM

Maddison McKibbin, an All-State volleyball player who will be a senior at Punahou in the fall, has been named to one of two U.S. boys teams that will compete at the Swatch FIVB 2008 Youth World Championships for beach volleyball at The Hague, Netherlands.

The tournament is July 30 to Aug. 3.

The 6-foot 5 McKibbin of Honolulu will be partnered with Will Montgomery of Santa Barbara, Calif.


BASKETBALL

PETE SMITH CAMP SET

The Pete Smith Basketball Camp will feature two sessions this summer for boys and girls ages 5 to 18.

Former University of Hawai'i standout guard Alika Smith — Pete's son — will be the director of the camp. Pete Smith, a longtime successful coach at Kalaheo High, died in October 2006.

Alika Smith said high school coaches from around the state are expected to serve as guest instructors.

Camp details:

Session one — July 21 to 25, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the Kalaheo High gym.

Session two — July 28 to Aug. 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at Hongwanji Mission of Hawai'i gymnasium (1727 Pali Highway).

Entry fee is $175 per session, or $300 for both sessions.
