Low sees more playing time in Mavericks' loss

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Derrick Low had three points, one rebound, one assist and two turnovers yesterday in the Dallas Mavericks' 95-86 loss to the Golden State Warriors in an NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas.

Low, a 2004 'Iolani School alum, played 7 minutes, 11 seconds — more than twice the amount of time he saw in the Mavericks' opener on Friday when he scored two points in 3:22 against the Clippers.

Yesterday, Low took two shots — both from 3-point range — and hit one.

Low, a rookie point guard, entered the game with 3:35 left in the third quarter and started the fourth quarter before being replaced with 6:24 to play. His 3-pointer with 7:52 left cut Dallas' deficit to 72-68, but the Warriors slowly pulled away for their second straight victory.

Another player with Hawai'i ties, former Rainbow Warrior Matt Lojeski, is also playing in the summer league.

Lojeski, a guard on the Milwaukee Bucks' roster, scored seven points Saturday in an 88-79 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

FOOTBALL

UH CAMP THIS WEEK

Many of the state's top high school football players will participate in the University of Hawai'i Skills Camp this week.

But the camp, which runs tomorrow through Friday, also is open to all talent levels.

The camp is for ages 13 and older, with the drills designed specifically for quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, linebackers and defensive backs.

Last year, defensive back Christian Vasconcellos of Damien Memorial School received a football scholarship from UH on the camp's final day. Vasconcellos joins the Warriors for training camp next month.

The UH coaching staff and several former Warriors will serve as instructors.

The pre-registration fee is $80; it's $90 for walk-ups.

Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. The sessions run from 9 to 11 a.m.

To pre-register, go to www.hawaiiathletics.com.

For details, call 956-4516.

All walk-up registrations must be paid with cash or money order. Checks will not be accepted.

SURFING

MONAHAN ADVANCES

Joy Monahan of 'Aina Haina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championship yesterday.

The third and fourth rounds were completed yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Biarritz, France.

Monahan was one of the top performers of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 13.75 in her fourth-round victory over Japan's Yuko Shimajiri.

Monahan is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest.

Three other Hawai'i surfers were eliminated yesterday: Kelia Moniz and Carissa Moore lost in the third round, and Miku Uemura lost in the fourth round.

The winner of the contest will be crowned the women's world champion of longboard surfing for 2008. All competitors in the contest have to ride surfboards at least 9 feet long.
