Church preschool gets $125,000 grant from state

The governor has released a $125,000 state grant for facility improvements at the Central Union Church preschool.

The money will be used to buy and install a fire alarm system, upgrade an electrical transformer and power lines and replace the plumbing.

"The upgrades and installation of safety systems are necessary to maintain the integrity of the historic church as well as provide critical safety systems for the preschool's young children and faculty," Gov. Linda Lingle said in a news release.

Central Union Church, completed in 1887, is on the state Register of Historic Places. Its preschool, which opened in 1928, has about 160 children.
