A 58-year-old man with 71 prior convictions was among six people charged today in Honolulu with petty misdemeanor shoplifting in an eight-hour period.

Rene Williams, who has no local address, is being held overnight at the main police station cellblock in lieu of $1,000 bail for fourth-degree theft. The bail amount reflects Williams being a chronic offender. He also is being held on three outstanding warrants totaling $600.

Williams was arrested at 1032 Fort Street Mall at 1:30 p.m.

The six shoplifting charges from 12:30 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. is unusually high.

Others charged were Steven Wright, 39; Larry Osaias, 28; Richard S. Kitajima Jr., 53; Giavonne D. Hall, 26, and Kristen Yuki Nelson, 21, who was also arrested for investigation of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Poasi Kaho, 19, was charged with fourth-degree theft earlier in the day.
