Tennis: France's Parmentier wins Gastein Ladies title

Associated Press

BAD GASTEIN, Austria — Fourth-seeded Pauline Parmentier of France won the Gastein Ladies final Sunday, beating Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.

It was Parmentier's second WTA Tour title after winning in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, last year.

"It was a wonderful week for me," the 53rd-ranked Parmentier said. "I am glad that I played well consistently. The rain made it hard as we had to play many matches in just a few days."

Hradecka, a 237th-ranked qualifier, won 11 titles on the ITF women's circuit but had previously never passed the second round of a WTA Tour event.

The Czech dominated the opening games with strong ground strokes and won nine of the first 10 points to race into a 4-1 lead.

Parmentier, who lost one set on her way to the final and eliminated top-seeded Agnes Szavay in the semifinals, did not concede a point in her next three service games and won eight consecutive games to lead 6-4, 3-0.

Hradecka took time out to have her right lower arm taped and managed to break back once. She saved a match point while serving at 3-5 when Parmentier hit a forehand wide, but Parmentier converted her third match point with an ace in the next game.
