Kona man accused of threatening wife

Advertiser Staff

A 42-year-old man has been charged with offenses stemming from a Kona domestic incident Friday to which police called in its Special Response Team and a crisis negotiator.

Denis Romulus Serbu was charged at 10:45 p.m. Friday with terroristic threatening, abuse of a household member, and interfering with the reporting of an emergency or crime and is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $4,100 bail. According to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, Serbu has one prior conviction.

During an argument with his wife at their Alahou Street residence in Kailua, Kona, Serbu allegedly held a knife to the woman's throat, choked her and prevented her from calling 911 by taking the telephone away from her and she tried to place the call, police said.

Police responded at 5:39 p.m. and the when officers could not establish contact with Serbu, who was inside the home, the Special Response Team and negotiators were called in for assistance. Serbu was arrested outside the home at 9:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
