The USS Arizona Memorial, where many of the 1,177 crew members have remained entombed since the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, is Hawai'i's most popular tourist attraction.

Now a new $52 million visitor center is planned, with construction to begin in September, as a replacement for the present Pearl Harbor facility that, according to the National Park Service, is sinking into the mud. The new visitor center, designed by Seattle's Portico Group and shown above in an architect's rendering, will house an education and research center, galleries, open-air exhibits, an outdoor amphitheater and two movie theaters for visitor orientation. The new center is set to open Dec. 7, 2010. www.pearlharbormemorial.com.
