McCain, Obama neck-and-neck in New Hampshire poll

Associated Press

A poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire shows Barack Obama leading John McCain by 3 percent, 46 to 43, in the presidential race.

New Hampshire is viewed as a swing state, and only half of likely voters said they have definitely decided on their choice for president.

The rest were leaning (21 percent) or still trying to decide (28 percent). Each candidate dominated his party's registered voters, but they divided independent voters fairly evenly. McCain also did well among conservatives, older voters and those living near Massachusetts. Obama did well among liberals, younger voters and those living along the seacoast.

Jobs and the economy was the top issue by far, with gasoline prices and health care tied far behind.

The University of New Hampshire poll of 475 likely voters was conducted by telephone from July 11-20. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
