Waipahu's Viloria to get IBF light flyweight title shot

Advertiser Staff

Waipahu boxer Brian Viloria has been named the mandatory challenger for the IBF world championship in the light flyweight division.

Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, said he is currently in negotiations for a title bout between Viloria and champion Ulises Solis.

"This will happen, it will likely take place in September or October," Gittelsohn said. "Brian is ecstatic about the opportunity, and he vows to make this the best training camp of his career."

Viloria, a Waipahu High graduate who now trains in Oxnard, Calif., is 22-2 with 13 knockouts. He is a former WBC light flyweight world champion.

Solis, who is from Mexico, is 27-1 with 20 knockouts. He won the IBF light flyweight (108 pounds) championship in 2006, and has successfully defended the title six times.

"Solis is widely recognized as the best 108-pound fighter in the world," Gittelsohn said. "This certainly will be a tough fight."

Viloria was scheduled to fight an unranked opponent in a non-title bout this Saturday at Las Vegas, but Gittelsohn said he canceled that bout when the IBF informed him of the title opportunity.
